This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 pm eastern starting in January for 15 weeks.

Japanese 1 is an introductory language course designed for students with little to no prior knowledge of the Japanese language. Throughout this course, students will develop foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese. Students will be introduced to the Japanese writing systems, including Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji, while learning essential vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. Emphasis will be placed on developing practical communication skills through interactive activities, conversations, and real-world language applications.

In addition to language development, students will explore Japanese culture, traditions, customs, and everyday life. Topics will include greetings, introductions, numbers, family, school, food, and daily routines. Through cultural lessons, multimedia resources, and engaging classroom activities, students will gain an appreciation for Japanese society and develop an understanding of cultural similarities and differences. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate using basic Japanese expressions and demonstrate an introductory understanding of Japanese language and culture.
