This class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 pm Eastern time starting in January.
French 1 invites high school students to discover the French language as a gateway to global communication, cultural exploration, and new perspectives. Designed for students with little to no previous experience in French, this introductory course emphasizes building confidence and developing practical communication skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn to navigate familiar situations, from introducing themselves and making new friends to discussing school, family, personal interests, and everyday routines. Through structured language practice, students will develop an understanding of French pronunciation, essential vocabulary, sentence formation, and foundational grammar, including articles, adjective agreement, and common present-tense verbs.
Throughout the course, students will experience French as a living language through interactive conversations, authentic media, collaborative activities, games, and creative projects. Rather than focusing exclusively on memorization, students will apply their growing language skills in meaningful contexts, including simulated real-world interactions, short presentations, and guided conversations. Lessons will encourage students to develop communication strategies, recognize familiar language patterns, and express their own ideas using increasingly varied vocabulary and sentence structures. Emphasis will be placed on building a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable experimenting with a new language.
Beyond the classroom, students will discover the diversity of the French-speaking world, exploring the cultures, traditions, histories, and contemporary lifestyles of communities throughout Europe, Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and beyond. Through cultural investigations, music, celebrations, geography, cuisine, and everyday experiences, students will gain an appreciation for the global significance of French and the many communities that speak it. By the end of French 1, students will possess a foundational understanding of the language, demonstrate the ability to communicate about familiar subjects, and develop the cultural awareness and confidence needed to continue their French language studies.
